INMONDIZIA
INMONDIZIA is an eco‑artivist project that transforms Mondizia — the discarded materials we produce and abandon — into works that question our relationship with the planet, with production systems, and with the value hierarchies that govern contemporary society.
Mondizia is a neologism coined by the artist to overturn the perception of “immondizia” (trash): for her, what we call waste is not im‑monda (unclean) but monda — possessing its own dignity and intrinsic value. Mondizia is matter that continues to bear witness, to speak, to live; an ethical archive that asks for attention, care, and responsibility.
Through an intradisciplinary approach that merges art, science, activism, and public engagement, INMONDIZIA offers a radical reflection on collective responsibility and the need to rethink cultural, economic, and social models. The project stems from the awareness that the ecological crisis is not only environmental but also symbolic: it concerns what we choose to see, what we ignore, what we discard. INMONDIZIA restores value to what we consider refuse, transforming it into visual language, testimony, and political act.
The Exhibition Path
The exhibition follows the journey of Francesca Busca’s eco‑artivism, whose aim is to spark ecological empathy starting from the realm humans know best: the land. Transformation can arise from familiarity.
PESO, the first room, is dedicated to the terrestrial world: the place where we feel rooted and at ease, aware of our weight and our importance, determined by the gravity that anchors us. Here Mondizia manifests in its earthly dimension: the part of the ecosystem we belong to and to which we assign value. It is the realm we perceive as familiar, stable, and comprehensible.
SOSPESO, the second room, brings the audience beneath the waves: the place on which the artist’s current research focuses, both materially and biologically. Here gravity seems challenged: everything is suspended, not only physically but emotionally. It is a realm that does not belong to us, that we do not know, that we often ignore — and precisely for this reason it generates uncertainty, discomfort, and the unconscious preconception that it is less relevant than the terrestrial realm. Yet it is a fundamental part of the ecosystem on which our survival depends. Marine Mondizia — marine debris, ghost nets, plastics, oil — becomes organism, nemesis, testimony, protagonist, and warning: materials that, in the sea, kill relentlessly through ingestion, suffocation, and entanglement, causing a silent and continuous devastation of marine life.
